Pest Eradication

There are 18 guineas on the farm. By night, they roost in a “hoop house” to be safe from predators. By day, they roam the farm consuming bugs and squatting to lay eggs whenever and wherever the urges strikes. They are voracious eaters of insects, especially ticks. Since they joined us on the farm we have seen the tick population wiped out. They also go through the garden devouring the Halyomorpha halys, best known as the brown marmorated stink bug, an invasive agricultural pest thought to have been introduced via shipping containers from either China or Japan.

They function as a unit, noisily moving as a big farm flash mob. In the course of a day, they can be seen in virtually every quadrant of the farm, occasionally making it to neighboring farms before being herded back home.
